Leela-Mattress-ReviewThe last time we bought a new mattress I was nine months pregnant with our first child, sleeping on an air bed, and things did not go well. What a difference ten years makes.

Ten years ago this summer, we found ourselves in that all too familiar situation many young couples find themselves in: pregnant and moving house. Why do we do it to ourselves? Why do we add all that extra stress to our lives just at the point when most women should be resting and nesting? Well I suppose the nesting has something to do with it and the absurd idea that you suddenly need more space (and maybe even a garden) just because you’re starting a family. Spoiler: the baby has no idea where it is as long as it has protection and food, it’s good! South facing windows don’t really come into it.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATo be fair, we wanted to leave our first floor flat in Leeds to move somewhere a bit more rural. Again, not the brightest idea on reflection. Having both rented all our adult lives, Greig and I proceeded to buy everything new including our first bed. However, thanks to the ‘wonderful’ experience of home buying we finally moved in just a couple of weeks before my due date (and before our new bed had arrived). Which meant me and my 9 month belly were rolling around on a saggy air mattress and I was feeling a tad hormonal by this point. When the bed finally arrived, the mattress was missing (thanks to a misunderstanding with the store salesman) and that’s when I burst into tears in front of two sheepish delivery men. Like I said, not good.

Fast forward ten years and it felt like it was time to replace the old mattress. And to give it credit, it’s been a really good one –  we got talked into buying a more luxurious pocket-sprung one – which has really served us well. So when Leesa got in touch looking for reviewers, I thought we’d give it a go. I’d heard good things about the quality and service, plus the fact that the mattress could be easily ordered online and delivered free.

leesa-mattress-reviewIn contrast to a regular mattress, a Leesa mattress comes compressed, rolled and boxed – so it’s easy to move up the stairs or through your bedroom door. It really is amazing to see a full size mattress expand into shape after being unboxed! It just goes to show how much things have innovated in the last decade. The mattress looked and felt really luxurious but the whole process was so much more convenient and hassle-free. Which is good, because I still don’t fancy going mattress shopping at the weekend with three kids in tow.

(By the way, I should just point out that what you can see in the photos above is actually the striped hard base we have to use with our bed, not another mattress. I’m not that much of a prima donna!).OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt takes about an hour or so for the mattress to properly unfurl and decompress. It starts off looking quite wrinkled and a bit thin and lumpy in comparison to a normal mattress but when I returned to it later I was impressed to see how much thicker and smoother it was; the same depth as our old mattress but brand spanking new. More importantly, how does it feel?OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWell when you first lie down you’re surprised at how soft and comfy a firm mattress can feel – if that makes sense. At first I said to Greig, it feels so lovely but will it be as supportive as our old pocket-sprung one? But after giving it a proper test, I can honestly tell you, it’s just as good (and maybe even feels slightly better) and feels ridiculously comfy when you climb into bed. We’ve had no strange aches or pains as a result of changing the mattress so I guess our backs like it too. The great thing is that Leesa offers a 100 night risk free trial so if you’re not happy you can return the mattress and get a full refund. They also run a charitable scheme whereby they donate mattresses to worthy causes such as Manchester based charity, Mustard Tree.

And as for the kids, they’ve all commented on how great it feels – like a bed for royalty (or maybe the Princess and the Pea?).OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Leesa can also put you in touch with charitable organisations which will collect your old mattress free of charge in order to donate it to charity, to make things even easier for their customers!

If you’d like to try a Leesa mattress for yourself, I’ve also got a great discount for you. Use this link to gain a £50 discount off a new mattress at the checkout.
