Our bedroom has always been a little dysfunctional. Pretty at times, mostly messy the rest of the time and always quite dysfunctional. By that I mean, it’s always been a bit of a squeeze, we’ve never found the right layout in order to maximise the space and this is mainly due to our beloved but faintly ridiculous poster point bed. It was the first item of furniture Greig and I bought for our home together. Slightly beyond our budget, we’d fallen in love with it and bought it anyway, which meant we were sitting on garden chairs watching our TV on a cardboard box for months. That was back when I was a romantic. I’ve hardened into a bit of a realist since then but I still love the bed (and more importantly the man, more than ever in fact).
Anyway back to the makeover (sorry about the nostalgic reverie – furniture can do that). So, our bedroom has always been a work in progress. We didn’t have enough space on both sides for Greig to have a bedside table so naturally I was in command on the lighting / tea / books side of things while he just used this as an excuse to stow all manner of crap next to his side of the bed. I also had a pretty vintage dressing table that, on reflection was very ornamental but not very useful (and also took up too much space). You can see what our bedroom used to look like in this post if you’re interested (by the way, if you want that dressing table before I ebay it, give me a shout). Now the dressing table has gone and the bed has been moved over, we have smaller matching bedside tables (ikea stepladders: cliche but I like them especially as these ones came in white so you don’t have to paint them anymore). So it only seemed right to get a new pair of matching bedside lamps. Oh the joy of individual lamp control, which means one of us can stay up reading later if the other wants to sleep etc. We chose two of this lovely charcoal grey lamp from Houseology (which happens to be reduced now), because they were just the right height (we measured), adjustable and had a nice sort of modern meets vintage feel.
Following a little bit of pinspiration on the idea of bedroom lounging (see this post), I also decided to move our sideboard up from downstairs to provide a more useful piece of storage (but still with styling opportunities aplenty of course). I think the colour of the wood matches the bed really nicely don’t you? The mirror came from a charity shop ages ago and has been waiting patiently for its moment in the sun – love the bevelled edges! I’m also pleased to have somewhere nice to put my cotton flowers. They were in my 40th birthday bouquet from Greig and I’m so glad I’ve got a permanent reminder of such a special bunch of flowers. Maybe I am still quite romantic after all.
And finally, new bedding. A new duvet, pillowcases, even just a throw or a new cushion – I always think they’re such an easy way to give your bedroom a mini makeover. Although I will just counter that by saying that Greig and I did give the whole room a fresh coat of white paint too so y’know, it depends how much of a change you fancy.
